Exeter Chiefs U16s 12

Tavistock U16s 43

TAVISTOCK won in convincing style despite the late withdrawal of two key players due to sickness.

The big, mobile pack caused the home side problems all over the pitch and quick ruck ball found skipper Sam Morton on the right wing for an unstoppable run to the try-line.

Further points followed when second row LLoyd Nail received the ball with plenty still to do and finished off a powerful drive with a fine try under the post. This was his first in rugby after many unselfish games gaining the hard yards. This spurred his twin Alex to greater efforts resulting in two tries.

Cass Williams, back after injury, looked dangerous every time he got the ball and his powerful, well balanced runs led to two tries for him.

Sam Lawson got his name on the scoresheet after snapping up a loose ball and crashing over from five metres out.

Despite a lot of second half pressure from Exeter, they only managed to run in two tries as the Tavistock defence held out as well as it has all season. Alex Moy at scrum half, who had his best game for a long while and fed his line well with a plethora of possession, converted four tries.

Tim Child at stand-off gave a masterclass in distribution and hardly put a foot wrong. Braithewaite at centre tackled hard and made good short runs in the second half while wings Honey and Beckenham provided stonewall defence but had little room or ball to operate with.

Man of the match: Jonny Stride.

No U16s rugby until training Thursday April 24.

Tavistock U13s 38

Launceston U13s 7

WEST Devon development coach George Pettingell set things up with a well received skills session before the match.

This paid off as Tavistock looked sharp and inventive. Playing against the slope and wind in the first half Tavistock worked hard to create space to free Jack Hodges and Andrew Smerdon, both scoring just before the interval.

Launceston?s back division looked dangerous as ball travelled quickly and accurately to centres and wing with Jimmy Hubbard, Chis Dawe and Doug Willatts required to deny them. It was left to John White, one of four Tavistock players provided to the Launceston team, to make them up to a full side, to spearhead a forwards? move to score between the posts and keep the scores close at half-time.

In the second half Tavistock won possession from set-pieces with tries from Ewan McCall, Andrew Smerdon, Chris Dawe and Doug Willatts.

Man of the match: Andrew Smerdon.

There is no training this Thursday, instead meet at Plymouth Albion ground at 7pm to watch George?s development side play Exeter.

Tavistock U12s 40

Launceston U12s 24

TAVISTOCK had two visitors for their last home game of the season, arch rivals Launceston and touring team Oxford.

Against Launceston. Tavistock started strongly, the pack of Smith, Roberts, Hill, Leeson and O?Neill dominating. From a driving maul Smerdon fed Milligan who darted through to score his first try at his new position of fly half.

Oddie at inside centre showed his strong running, setting up a maul close to Launceston line. O?Neill ripped his way to the line. He soon scored his second try with a solo effort, using his power.

Not to be outdone, Roberts, Tavistock?s hooker, drove a maul ten metres and came out of the ensuing pile-up to score the fourth try.

The second half saw some changes: Robinson as prop and Barnes as hooker.

With the wind at Launceston?s back they soon scored three tries. Evans helped repel Launceston?s wide attacks. Lane started to works his forwards and it was not long before he ripped the ball from the back of the maul and crashed over to score.

Thompson, outside centre, set up Tavistock?s sixth try. From one of his tackles, the forwards rucked over. Lane picked up and crashed through Launceston?s defence to score his second try and to make the game safe. James converted three and Milligan two.

Oxford U12s 7

OXFORD, with fresh legs, started the stronger and took the lead with a try. Tavistock?s backs, Milligan, Oddie, Thompson, and Smith, were kept busy thwarting a determined threequarter line and managed to hold out until half-time.

In the second half, Lane came back on as scrum-half and Milligan worked some fine moves with Oddie at centre. From one of Thompson?s runs, James, the full-back, took a pop pass from him and burst through Oxford?s defence, but was held up short.

O?Neill, Leeson, Robinson and newcomer Jack set up a driving maul. O?Neill again ripped it from the back and powered his way to the line.

Tavistock needed to put in some courageous tackles to keep Oxford at bay. Leeson, from an Oxford clearance kick, charged forward into the heart of their defence, Roberts and Hill gave close support to set up a maul. Lane finished the move by powering toward the line for Tavistock?s winning try. James converted one.

TAVISTOCK U8s attended the Devon Festival at Ivybridge on Sunday and won all their games with all members of the squad making big contributions.

Plymstock nosed ahead immediately after the break only for Jamie Stephens to bring the score level following a fine break by Jonty Newton.

During the final five minutes both teams pressed for the winning score; again Tavistock?s defence stood firm with Daniel Sergeant outstanding. Davis?s determination won the game for Tavistock with a fine individual try.

Man of the match: Rhys Davis.

Tavistock U8s 25

Exeter Chiefs U8s 15

TAVISTOCK scored in quick succession with fine tries from Jonny Parsons and Aiden Mason.

Exeter fought back strongly but Tavistock?s defence, marshalled by captain Rory Kirkman and with Jake Backway making numerous tackles, restricted Exeter to one try. Jonny Parsons scored his second to put Tavistock 15-5 ahead only for Exeter to score just before half-time.

The second half was dominated by Tavistock with Thomas Rutson superb in defence and being rewarded by two excellent tries following good Tavistock handling moves.
