Jewson South Western League
Wadebridge Town 2
Callington Town 4
CALLINGTON overcame a sticky opening to eventually dominate and, but for fine keeping from Wadebridge Phil Taylor, and woeful finishing by the visiting forwards, a bigger score would not have been undeserved.
Wadebridge were almost celebrating taking the lead on two occasions inside the first three minutes. First Mark Damerell was set free but shot straight at Wayne Wormald in the Callington goal then James Cudmore saw his shot balloon off the crossbar after being set free.
Gradually Callington came back into the game. Taylor saved well from Ray Clarke on 9 minutes while Steve Treble also went close.
The deadlock was not broken until the 31st minute when, after the ball rattled round the Wadebridge penalty area like a pinball, Stuart Wakenshaw fired home amid a melee of legs to put the visitors ahead.
Mark Conday almost levelled for the home side on 38 minutes; his shot was palmed over the bar by Wormald but they did get the equaliser on the stroke of half-time. Brian Jefferis found himself in space 30 yards out and had no hesitation in firing a bullet-like shot that beat the Town keeper before bulging the back of the net.
Callington were soon back in control and four minutes into the half, Gary Smith crossed and Steve Treble scored with ease to restore the lead.
Callington had to re-arrange at the back on the hour when Wormald hobbled off injured with Simon Courts going into goal but it was the other keeper who was the busiest, picking the ball out of the net twice in the following nine minutes as striker Ray Clarke hit a brace of goals. First he converted another cross from Smith, before finishing after Smith and Wakenshaw had combined, and the game was safe.
Wadebridge had the last say as Paul Thompson beat the for once static Callington defence to fire past Courts.
l Callington face two teams near the bottom of the league. On Saturday Falmouth Town are the visitors to Ginsters Marshfield Parc, kick-off 3pm, while on Wednesday September 13, they travel to meet Bodmin Town at Priory Park with a 7.30pm kick-off.
