I GIVE my heartfelt support to Alan Fox's letter in last week's Times.

Last Saturday I attended a concert at the Wharf given by two distinguished musicians, (cellist and pianist). There were 60 people in the audience.

Tavistock is extremely lucky to have an arts centre like the Wharf.

As president of Kingdon House Community Association, where in times past Tavistock's tradition of supporting the arts was upheld, I speak with great urgency.

Tavistock, a town of historic importance and present pride surely deserves an arts centre like the Wharf.

Fellow citizens, support your arts centre or it will die.

REGARDING the letter (March 30) submitted by Alan Fox concerning The Wharf, I would beg to make the following points:-

The Wharf is, indeed, an excellent amenity and those who give much of their spare time to its running are to be both admired and thanked. However, it is doubtful it will ever become really successful unless it appeals to younger people in the town and district.

One way this problem could possibly be partially addressed would be to amend the name of The Wharf to reflect the fact that it is predominantly a cinema.

Films are the main form of entertainment featured at The Wharf, thus it would surely make sense to reflect as much in the name. Young people are more likely to turn out to see films, consistently, than for anything else.

Regarding the comments concerning 'the council', Mr Fox's implied criticisms are, at best, ill-informed, at worst, mischievous.

The facts are that were it not for the Tavistock Town Council making over the entire Wharf area to the West Devon Borough Council on a 999-year lease, plus the borough council spending a large amount of public funds in creating this excellently designed and constructed building, The Wharf would not exist.

IT WAS disappointing to read of the poor attendance for cinema showings at the Wharf. One of the reasons may be the time lapse between the film release and its showing at the Wharf — we are an impatient society!

However, I would like to offer an assurance that the Wharf can be filled to capacity, as it was on the evening of March 25 for a charity concert led by the Plymouth Area Police Choir in aid of West Devon Victim Support.

It was a most enjoyable evening and the sum of £700 was raised.

The management committee would like to extend thanks to all who attended and are also very grateful to Plymco, Safeway, Somerfield and Tesco who kindly donated the refreshments for the interval.

The choir said the acoustics were excellent and I agree that we are lucky to have such a theatre on our doorstep.
