THREE lime trees are being planted in St Eustachius churchyard, Tavistock, on Monday to replace the ones which were felled last year. The new semi-mature trees are to replace the common lime trees which were reduced to stumps after reports they were unsafe. The survey, undertaken in winter 2006, reported three common lime trees in St Eustachius churchyard and two common limes in Abbey Chapel churchyard were not safe. The trees had multiple wounds from previous pollarding, and there were dead limbs overhanging the footpaths and roads, so immediate felling was recommended. The two limes trees in Abbey Chapel churchyard will not be replaced, due to the possibility of damage to architectural remains just below the surface. The tree planting ceremony will take place at 1.30pm and will be conducted by Tavistock mayor Anne Johnson, assisted by the Rev Michael Brierley, priest in charge of Tavistock and Gulworthy.
