A GROUP of disadvantaged children from across the country enjoyed an 'incredible' Christmas thanks to the support of a West Devon charity.
More than 20 children, aged eight to 15, many of whom had never experienced a traditional Christmas, spent the week with CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids) at the charity's retreats in Brentor and Par in Cornwall.
During the week the group enjoyed a range of festivities, including carol singing, secret Santa and a trip to the pantomime, where they even got to meet Cinderella, Buttons and the Ugly Sisters.
Tim Bunting, head of fundraising and communications, said: 'The week was incredible and the children all had a fantastic time. It was great to see them so happy as normally they would be unable to spend Christmas at home due to issues such as poverty, neglect, abuse or caring responsibilities.'
One of the children who enjoyed the retreat was 15-year-old Michael.
Tim said: 'Michael has spent years suffering from severe neglect. His home conditions were so appalling that he did not even have access to running water or heating, and was subsequently removed from his parents home.
'Without the support of businesses, donors and our volunteers, it would not have been possible for us to give Michael and the other children a Christmas to remember.'
On Christmas Day the children all received a stocking and individual gifts chosen especially for each child. They also enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
Six CHICKS employees and twelve volunteers gave up time with their families to spend it with the children. Volunteers travelled from across the UK, including Scotland, Birmingham, Cambridge and London to support CHICKS' work.
Volunteer Alice Walker-Shakespeare, 19, from Birmingham, said: 'I love CHICKS and I love Christmas, and what could have been better than sharing my Christmas with these amazing children.
'Everyone was just so happy all the time. Seeing this special group of kids enjoying themselves, being children and still being so mature and grateful for every single thing they were given was amazing.
'Christmas is my favourite time of year, however, growing up as a young carer meant it was not always easy. This means it is so much more important to spend it with those who are most important to you.'
