VOLUNTEERS from around West Devon were armed with tape and scissors to help wrap more than 1,000 presents for a children's charity.

CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids) holds free respite breaks for disadvantaged children throughout the year. The charity is holding Christmas camps for the first time this year at its two retreats in Brentor and Par in Cornwall, and every child who visits the retreats over Christmas will receive a gift.

The charity welcomed more than 70 volunteers to listen to Christmas songs, eat mince-pies and help wrap the 1,200 presents in paper of all colours.

Three women from Brentor lent a hand and some of CHICKS' corporate partners also brought some help.

Janet from Wrigleys in Plymouth said: 'We bring a team every year, we welcome the chance to come and help.'

Specsavers, Plymouth City College and HMS Raleigh were also among the speedy wrappers.

LPT Wright from HMS Raleigh said: 'Last year at Christmas, my three-month-old daughter was taken into hospital. We spent the entire break at her side. It made me want to get out and help others.

'I first got involved with CHICKS in the summer when helping the Wrigleys team do some maintenance at the coastal retreat. I was then told of other events and I wanted to bring the lads down to help with the wrapping. The guys have really enjoyed it — it's great to do something different and we want to do more in the new year.'

On Christmas morning, 1,200 children will open a gift from CHICKS, which may be the only present they receive this Christmas.

The charity expressed thanks to everyone who helped. Anyone who would like information on ways to support CHICKS can contact Mick Ryan, community fundraiser on 01822 811020 or email [email protected]">[email protected]
