OKEHAMPTON Golf Club played a Fourball Better Ball Medal on Saturday. Although bitterly cold the entry was high and the condition of the course was excellent. Scoring was close though Chris Hurley and Sam Hurdwell had a clear win in division one with a net 60. The next three teams all scored net 62 but second with a better back three, were Colin Cornwall and Martin Cox; third were John Mansell and Rich Camies with Steve Rice and Dave Bickle in fourth. Division two was also decided on countback with Rob Camies and Barry Down having a better back nine and a net 61 from Gary Hodgson and Dave Turner. Third were Richard Prouse and Brian Fishliegh, net 63, and fourth were Bob McDowell and Colin Sturgess, net 64. On December 12 the ladies had a fun three ball, yellow ball Stableford followed by a Christmas lunch and a lot of fun! Though Santa Claus arrived with his sack of gifts the ladies could only claim one by singing a carol, quoting a ditty or telling a joke! The golf had been played in lovely conditions and the winning team of Maureen Willocks, Mary Keir and Doris Jewell had an excellent score of 98 points. In a close second place, with 97, were lady captain Cherry James, Maureen Howe and Lorna McCurrach and in third place were Pam Jarman, Shirley Reddaway and Janet Hatch on 80. Nearest the pin was won by Lorna McCurrach and a special prize given for the best yellow ball score was won by Marcia Jones. On December 14 the club held its annual turkey supper and the change over of the club captaincy as John Rattenbury handed over to Allen Deakin. The new vice captain, Peter Murphy, was introduced and the juniors also had their change of captains with Jonny Rattenbury handing over to Lawrence Waldron. After the official business had finished the Christmas draw took place followed by a lot of fun and Christmas Carols.
