LIFE will taste sweet for a Devon polar explorer who embarked this week on an attempt to become the first woman to walk alone to the North Pole. That is because Ann Daniels left the UK on St Valentine?s Day to start her epic challenge, with a special ingredient in her supplies ? chocolate. Richard Taylor-Young, of Browne?s Chocolates from Throwleigh, said: ?It is a real delight to us that we are involved in Ann?s world record attempt. ?Ann lives in Devon and we are based at Throwleigh on the edge of Dartmoor, so it seems even more fitting that we support Ann in this challenge. ?There will be many moments, I?m sure, when Ann will need a burst of energy and we hope that in a small way we can provide a helping hand with her world record attempt.? Browne?s is supplying 40 kg of premium quality Barry-Callebaut?s chocolate ?buttons? for the expedition ? 20kg will be taken by Anne at the start of the journey and another 20kg will be held at base camp should more be needed. Ann said: ?On this expedition I have to carry everything, as I am unsupported, so things which are compact are top of the list. ?It?s also vital that I have a really top quality chocolate as in freezing temperatures food quickly loses its flavour. ?Browne?s is supplying me with chocolate with a very high cocoa content so even when it?s frozen I?ll still be able to taste it.? Chocolate is a favourite not just for its taste, but also as a source of energy as it contains concentrated calories in a small volume which can assist recuperation after intense training or physical exertion.
