A CHINESE-themed display at the Eden Project's Cultural Diversity Fair has won Calstock Primary School a cup for tourism.

Pupils from class one and three won the Cornwall College Tourism Cup for their exhibition of Chinese themed masks, hats, poetry, calligraphy, scrolls and paintings. They competed against other junior schools throughout Cornwall.

Curriculum area manager for travel and tourism at Cornwall College Shirley Oliver said: 'The event was a fantastic success. All of the schools and the college worked exceptionally hard to bring the event together.

'Calstock's project was outstanding. Not only was their quality of work great, with amazing textures, but they were also very enthusiastic. I'm sure their teachers were very proud of them as they are an absolute credit to their school.'

Senior teacher at Calstock School Lizzie Congdon said: 'We were already doing work on the Chinese culture and decided to carry on with it when we heard about the event at Eden. The children loved it. They were really interested and learnt a great deal. We were really pleased to have won as they all worked really hard.'

The cultural diversity fair ran for three days and included interactive games and activities, demonstrations, displays, shows and stage performances. Countries represented included America, Hawaii, Mexico, Spain, Japan, Africa and Nepal.

The college said it was an important event, not only to help educate students and other members of the community on the different cultures around the world, but also to give people a chance to celebrate and experience these different ways of life.
