Carlsberg South Western League St Austell 4 Callington Town 2 ST Austell ended a nine-game losing run with this victory that halted, at least temporarily, Callington?s green shoots of revival. The meagre crowd was bolstered by 20 Callington Town supporters who outnumbered the home fans. Callington should have taken a second minute lead when Gavin Richardson created room on the right and crossed for the on running Lee Crook, but the striker saw his shot go wide of the post. They were made to pay for this miss 90 seconds later when in St Austell?s first attack, the ball cannoned off the back of Town defender John Styring and sat up nicely for Jason Marks who curled it past Vinnie Bowman from 18 yards to give the home side the lead. Callington were denied an equaliser on 12 minutes when Richard Daley?s goalbound shot was cleared off the Saints line. Again their inability to take chances cost them as St Austell doubled their advantage on 23 minutes. They were awarded a free kick and Chris Saunders wallopped the ball goalwards. Bowman got his hands on the ball but could not stop it creeping over the line. Town?s new manager Geoff Battams? team talk at half-time must have done the trick as within 45 seconds Callington were back in the match, but at a cost. Young winger Luke Avis Riordan overcame a late tackle on the goal-line on the right to cross the ball and Wayne Moussalli was on hand to head his second goal in successive games. Avis Riordan?s substitution followed and this seemed to unbalance Town as St Austell began to dominate. Adam Lee was denied by a good Bowman save on 61 minutes but the Town keeper could not prevent the midfielder grabbing a third St Austell goal on 66 minutes. Bowman made another fine save, again from Lee, tipping his fierce shot over the bar, but then had a nightmare situation when he dropped a bread and butter shot and Lee Grogan pounced to put St Austell 4-1 ahead. Callington did not give up and on the 90th minute a Pete Floyd cross was met by Styring and his shot appeared to have crossed the line before fellow defender Darren Woolley made sure. Callington had lots of possession in the eight minutes of injury time, but could not make another breakthrough and the final whistle saw St Austell leapfrog back over Callington and send the East Cornwall side back into the bottom two. Cornish Guardian East Cornwall Premier League Probus 2 Callington Town 0 PROBUS continued their push for honours against a depleted Callington. Four third team players stepped up to answer the call after a spate of late absences. Darren Benfield took up position between the Callington posts. Although they kept the home strikers at bay, it was only a matter of time before Probus broke the deadlock ? it came on 43 minutes when Chris Heywood fired past Benfield. The second period followed in the same vein and Heywood doubled the advantage midway through the half to settle the match. This defeat, combined with Camelford?s 5-1 anhialation of Callington?s next opponents, Torpoint, dropped Town into 14th place, uncomfortably close to the bottom six positions that will go into the new East Cornwall first division next season.
