FIREFIGHTERS were called to extinguish a chimney fire in a cottage in Halwill on Sunday afternoon.

A crew from Holsworthy attended the incident just before 1pm to find a chimney fire involving a solid fuel stove. Crews got to work using chimney gear and a thermal image camera. They requested the attendance of firefighters from Hatherleigh.

Smoke was entering the first floor, due to the chimney being fully lined with a steel liner, and crews were forced to cut away floorboards. Firefighters remained on scene for cooling to take place.
