PUPILS from three schools in the Okehampton area were last week recognised for their dedication to learning with silver certificates from the Children's University. The Children's University aims to provide innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours to children aged between seven and 14, and engages the wider community as learning partners. Pupils have a 'passport' and collect stamps based on the number of hours of informal learning at clubs and activities outside school hours, which go toward Children's University award certificates of bronze, silver and gold. Twenty four children from Lydford, Hatherleigh and South Tawton Primary Schools and their families attended the event at Adventure Okehampton, one of the Children's University learning destinations.Youngsters were lucky enough to get a fun science demonstration on the day. Heather Parks from Community Lynx South West, said: 'We definitely showed that learning can be fun. Science Boffin Sophie had the children — and adults — in stitches as she created elephant toothpaste, blew up cherryade bottles, and performed various other fun experiments. 'Sophie was not short of volunteers as the children were all eager to join in. 'Even the dignitaries did not escape participation – and the children watched as the mayor and mayoress of West Devon and Mr Allenton Fisher from Okehampton United Charity had to take their chances with cups of water being poured over their heads. 'Fortunately for them the science worked, and they did not get wet!'
