Devon and Cornwall League OPMs 1st XV 12 Okehampton Chiefs 27 THE Chiefs gave far and away their most cohesive performance of the season to earn an invaluable and deserved victory at fourth-placed Old Plymothians. However, victory looked highly unlikely as early as the fifth minute when the home side?s full back converted his own try under the posts following impressive interplay between the Pascoe brothers in the centre who opened up the Okehampton mid-field defence. Okehampton, who were delighted to have back the services of Lee Carey, albeit playing in an unaccustomed position of full back, together with Greg Cornish in the centre where he is capable of having a much greater influence on games, made good use of the ball won for them by the pack. After taking the ball at pace, Cornish scored wide out. The conversion was missed and despite Okehampton exerting some pressure it was OPMs? turn to score next when following a driving maul from 22 metres their scrum half scored in the corner. Directly from the restart pressure from the Okehampton forwards resulted in the award of a penalty which Lee Carey duly converted. Lo and behold from the next restart a scrum was awarded to Okehampton and following swift passing between the half backs, the ball found its way via Carey to Cornish, who scored under the posts to make the half-time score Okehampton 15, Old Plymothians 12. The Chiefs kept things well under control during the first period of the second half and following some good driving work by the forwards. When the ball was recycled several times, Okehampton captain Steve Alford went over wide out. Within 10 minutes Okehampton had made the game safe when, following a good turnover ball, B J Chapman found himself in plenty of room to canter in from 40 metres. Greg Cornish converted to make the score Okehampton 27, Old Plymothians 12. This was a most encouraging performance from Okehampton. All squad members involved in this victory should be justifiably proud of themselves.
