TAVISTOCK Lions Club president Lyn Roberts handed over two cheques for £1000 each to representatives from the local branches of the RNLI and the NSPCC during the recent Carnival Cheque Presentation night in the Parish Rooms. Local RNLI branch president Peter Plumb and chairperson of the local NSPCC branch Priscilla Gillett received these cheques respectively for their charities. Just over £6000 was distributed during the evening, £1000 to each of the two main charities and a further £4150 to 30 local schools, clubs and organisations and six other charities that had been nominated by the companies that had very kindly supplied transport for the Carnival Parade. This year, the Lions had decided that those participating in the parade should benefit even more than in previous years from the money raised during Carnival Week because of the work and expense involved in designing and building the floats and making the costumes. The Lions therefore distributed cash prizes of £120, £80 and £60 to those coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Artistic and Humorous classes and £60, £40 and £30 to those coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Walking and Visiting Queens classes. These new prizes were given in addition to the £200 for Best in Procession won by St Peter?s C of E Junior School and £150 for Best in Theme won by Lamerton C of E Primary School. Lyn said: ?I am delighted to see so many people here to receive their cheques. The response made worthwhile all of the hard work put in by the club and everybody that participated in Carnival week. ? She hoped next year?s event would be even better. The theme will be ??Peoples of the World?. Tavistock Mayor Jenny Metcalf was a special guest of the Lions Club at the Carnival 2005 Presentation Evening and said it was ?an enjoyable and most impressive event?. ?The carnival 2005 presentation evening was very moving and exciting. Thank you to all the kindly Lions for all their hard work, imagination and generosity to our community of Tavistock,? she said.
