A BOTTLE of bubbly was opened to celebrate the first millennium project to be completed recently at a picturesque spot in Horrabridge.

A small area close to the bridge and opposite the Leaping Salmon pub has been given a facelift thanks to Dartmoor National Park Authority which agreed to help finance and oversee the project.

Sampford Spiney and Horrabridge WI paid Dartmoor Prison to produce three seats for the area.

Members of the three groups met to toast the completion of the enhancement which also includes a new surface of granite-effect silver grey slabs, a drop kerb for ease of access by mothers with pushchairs and people in wheelchairs, a new single post and rail fence and a granite kerb to form a planter.

Committee chairman Mike Jessop said: 'The enhancement is the first completed project to mark the year 2000 and will be enjoyed by villagers and visitors over the years to come.

'We are very grateful to the WI and Dartmoor National Park for their help and support and look forward to developing further projects within the village including a ramp for ease of access between the road and play area within Weir Park.'
