TWO Tavistock-based organisations are set to benefit from a windfall, following the winding up of the town's Charter Group accounts. The group was set up to organise celebrations commemorating the 900th anniversary of the granting of Tavistock's market charter in 2006, and the 750th anniversary of its stannary status. It attracted some £30,000 worth of grant funding, the town council granting the group £10,000. Group chairman Iain Andrews, a former town councillor, contacted the council to inform it the accounts were being wound down. He asked for any suggestions members may have as to a deserving cause which could benefit from the final £1,000 remaining in the kitty. Cllr Mandy Govier told members at their full meeting last Tuesday that she felt it would be a good idea to keep the money to help maintain the charter tree mosaic, which was created on the wall by Abbey Gate in Bedford Square. Mr Andrews told the council that funds had already been set aside for this purpose and reminded members it was not the council's money on which to make a decision. Under the charter group's constitution, any remaining monies should be distributed to 'local charitable and voluntary organisations and groups'. The council did not put forward any further suggestions and backed Mr Andrew's proposal that the money be donated to Tavistock female choir Vocal Harem and the Stannary Brass Band.
