A WEST Devon-based animal charity has issued a seasonal plea to motorists to be more aware during the dark days of winter.
South West Equine Protection (SWEP) is urging motorists on the roads to 'Think Pony and Slow Down', particularly on roads around areas where ponies and their foals might be grazing.
A spokesperson for SWEP said: 'Ponies and foals are particularly vulnerable this time of year as they are not road-wise, they are attracted to the road for warmth and salt from the grit. Lorries and the dark evenings and poor visibility for road users increases the risk of a road traffic collision with a pony or any livestock on the moor.
'Already many ponies and other livestock have had their lives claimed by drivers over December and January; none reported the collision and animals have been left to suffer unnecessarily.
'This is terrible behaviour and things must change, you just can't leave an animal to suffer, there are no excuses!'
Motorists are being encouraged to report any incidents to police on 101 or the South West Equine Protection Office on 01822 854823, to the welfare officer on 07717 311251 or to the welfare assistant on 07551 457926
Drivers can also request a 'Think Pony! Slow Down' car window sticker and information pack by emailing their name and address to [email protected]">[email protected]
