TAVISTOCK Rotary Club arranged a Charity Golf Day in aid of the Charity Plymouth Kidzzz, which provides support for children at Derriford Hospital.

A total of 29 teams of three entered the event, the first starting at 9.30am and the last at 1pm. Participants travelled from as far away as Worcester, Coventry and Swindon.

After several days of rain the organisers were worried about the weather, having decided it was too expensive to insure against it. After early showers, the sun shone through and the day remained fine.

Green staff had been preparing the course from 6am and it was in excellent condition. Refreshments were provided by St Austell Brewery on the 14th hole.

For almost two hours the first team out, Dr A Winfield, D Anthony and T Gibson, led with a score of 76 points. Just when they were about to open the champagne, a family team came in with one more point (77) and pipped them at the post.

The Nand-lal team, Pauline with two sons, Simon and Tim, who were junior members at Tavistock in the 1980s, were announced as winners.

Everyone felt the day had been a major success and the organisers were hoping to raise approximately £1,750 for the charity.

The main prizewinners — 1 Pauline, Tim and Simon Nand-lal; 2 Dr A Winfield, T Gibson and D Anthony; 3 The Rover Team of Andy Hext, Peter Haigh and Alan.

The beat male score was T Nand-lal with 38 points and the best female was Gloria Westhead with 32 points.

The organisers expressed thanks to the main sponsors for their support, without which the day would not have been such success: Mansbridge and Balment, Francis Clark and South West Acrylics Ltd.
