A FIRST fundraising event to create a Devon support centre for families living with spina bifida will take place in Hatherleigh next Friday (August 5.) A charity auction will be held at the Tally Ho! pub from 8pm where 62 lots, from mobile phones to Disneyland Paris tickets , will be on offer. The campaign for a support centre in Devon, which is the only county without one, has been spearheaded by the Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and local mum Jo Downes. Jo?s daughter, Kerenza, who is now nine months old, was born with the condition and although hospital staff were good, Jo said she had to learn most about it from a leaflet. She said: ?It would have been nice to go to a specialist centre where you can get all the information you need and talk to other parents in the same situation so you know you are not the only one. ?Kerenza has problems with her leg but we have had some really good signs that she may be able to walk in the future. ?She has to have another two operations this year but hopefully that will be it ? she is doing brilliantly.? Jo said the auction would be kick-starting the fund and she would be a key worker in the Devon area for the association. The cost of a centre and where it would be set up are not yet known. ?At this point we just need to get some funds to start the ball rolling and get the interest. ?We hope as many people as possible come along to the auction.?
