DISPLAYS of photographs and documents relating to Brentor and its history will be on display at the Brentor Community Trust Open Day on Saturday (November 9).
The open day will give people a chance to see what the Brentor Community Trust does, meet the trustees and help them plan for the future. They can also view documents and photographs focusing on Brentor Village Hall's role in the life of the village and Brentor during the First World War, accompanied by slide shows and audio-visual displays.
The community trust is a charitable trust run by a small number of trustees and volunteers. It began in 1978 to support a Brentor community shop, set up in the church hall after the village was isolated for four days by blizzards. The shop closed after 15 years but many other community activities of the trust still continue.
A monthly newsletter, The Brentor News, was started in 1979 and has been published and distributed free to all households in the village ever since.
The trust also brings regular 'Villages in Action' entertainment events to the village hall, established the Brentor Living Archive in 2001 and set up the popular village website (http://www.brentorvillage.org">www.brentorvillage.org) in 2009.
The Living Archive collects copies of photographs and documents relating to Brentor and has a number of sound recordings of local residents' memories. Soon, some of its collection of more than 400 items will be going online to make them available to a wider audience. The village website provides up-to-date news and information about the village and all its activities and is visited by residents and ex-residents from all over the world.
The history and impact of these activities can be explored at the Open Day at Brentor Village Hall, between 11am and 4.30pm.
Entry to the open day is free and home-made refreshments will be available.
