South Devon premier Chagford 5 Hele Rovers 1 HAVING faced each other 24 hours previously (with Hele winning 4-0) both sides were forced to make a fistful of changes each. Fortunately, the absentees from Chagford's line-up were more than adequately covered by those coming in, showing a complete contrast to the previous day's lethargy. It took a mere 37 seconds for Chagford's Miller to pick up Johnston's flick on, gleefully gallop free of his marker and coolly slip the ball under the on- rushing goalkeeper. Local boy, Miller, welcomed his return to a more accustomed role up front and the early lead raised the hosts' expectations. These were fully justified as an interchange of passes between Whatley and Miller led to the latter notching his second goal in the 20th minute. Just five minutes later, Chagford were on cloud nine as James Williams scored a third, seemingly putting the game beyond Rovers' reach. However, the visitors woke up and, within a minute, their full-back made use of the free space he found himself in to curl a sweet strike to the top corner of Chagford's goal. This promoted a flurry of activity from Hele but they found Scarry and his defence resolute and strong. The rest of the half and, indeed, the first 20 minutes of the second saw a much more open game with both sides developing (and in Chagford's case) spurning chances. Last ditch tackles and wayward shots prevented the home side from doubling their advantage but were a taste of things to come. Dan Johnston, on his return from injury, did well to last a punishing 70 minutes but it was his replacement who was to score within five minutes of taking the field. Chadwick and Gavin Forsey combined to send Hutchison away on the right and the lanky defender crossed superbly for substitute, Chris Woof, to nod home from four yards out. Again, chances came and went but the introduction of Reserve team regulars, Jamie Forsey and Jon Philpott, ensured these went to Chagford and not the visitors. Three minutes before time, Gavin Forsey crashed his way through three challenges to score and cap a personally fine performance with a well deserved goal. This was a key result, against an improving team, that bounced Chagford back to fourth in the table. l Chagford now entertain second placed Upton Athletic on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) and table toppers, Bovey Tracey on Tuesday (kick-off 6.15pm).
