A CERAMIC tree depicting the history of Tavistock is currently being assembled by the archway at Court Gate. Rosie Fierek, from Albaston Pottery, is the artist in charge of this large scale operation which will see her place more than 200 pottery sections onto the wall – taking in total six months to complete. Each individual piece of clay on the trunk of the tree will tell a story of Tavistock, including Tavistock Abbey, the first market, tin mining, the cloth industry which made Tavistock its riches and helped build St Eustachius, Sir Francis Drake, geese, and the Duke of Bedford. The ceramic artwork marks the 900th anniversary of the granting of Tavistock's market charter, celebrated in 2005. There will also be an array of leaves with 18 fruits, designed by children from Tavistock College, Tavistock Primary School and St Peters School to show how they see Tavistock today.
