AS PART of the National Youth Week celebrations, Room 13 in Okehampton opened its doors to the local community on Saturday.

Local residents were invited along to celebrate the young people's achievements and find out about the youth work that is happening in the area — and the event was well supported.

Services at Room 13, which is managed by the Devon Youth Service, include providing a safe, social space, a drop-in centre, activities, trips, a summer programme, young parents' group, sexual health services, support services, a music project, street-based programmes and a rural outreach service.

Room 13 helps to keep young people off the streets and from getting into trouble and gives them time to enjoy the company of others in a good environment, said Devon youth service.

There was live music, a Nintendo Wii competition, displays and information and free refreshments made by the youngsters on offer at the open day.
