IN any book entitled 'Devon's Fifty Best Churches' anyone from West Devon would expect their area to be well represented and in this latest publication from historian Dr Todd Gray, it does not disappoint.

Among the ecclesiastical gems of historical, architectural and spiritual excellence Dr Gray has selected St Andrew's in Bere Ferrers, St Michael's in Brentor, St Peter's in Lewtrenchard, St Eustacius in Tavistock and All Saints at Winkleigh.

An American from New England with a doctorate in history from Exeter University, the author has written more than 45 books on the history of Devon and Cornwall, and last year was awarded the Devon History Society's Devon Book of the Year for Lest Devon Forgets about the county's First World War memorials.

His investigation has taken him to 475 ancient churches and travelled more than 8,000 miles through Devon's lanes to visit each one and his list itemises the outstanding ancient stained glass, pulpits, fonts, monuments and seating that can be found locally which produces what he describes as the 'wow factor' in visitors.

With more than 200 pages, 160 colour photographs and informative descriptions of the 50 churches this makes not only a good book of reference but an interesting insight to some of the counties most enduring treasures.

Published by The Mint Press 'Devon's Fifty Best Churches' cost £15. ISBN 978-1903356609.
