NORTH Tawton Parish Council believes CCTV or an alcohol ban could be the answer to solving problems of rowdyism and vandalism in the town.

The concerns are being addressed by the council following a petition submitted by residents of Exeter Street.

Town clerk Alison Baker said the problems started in The Square but were beginning to spill out into the rest of the town.

'A lot of people are very uptight about it,' she said.

'After the pubs close and Nero's nightclub in Okehampton closes young people hang around the Square with cans of drink.

'It is mostly a noise problem but acts of petty vandalism are being carried out on the way home.

'People are getting fed up with windscreen wipers on cars being broken, litter bins being kicked persistently and doors being knocked on in the early hours of the morning.

'The council is looking at a possible alcohol ban in the Square or CCTV. It may be that surveillance cameras are a bit over the top for the problem but all the options are being looked into.'

Sergeant Gary Neeves at Okehampton said: 'We recognise the issue of young people in rural villages with very little to do and the isolation they suffer.

'This is one of the priorities of the West Devon Community Safety Group, and one of the areas being looked into is developing services for young people in the district in partnership with the borough council and other bodies.

'Although this is a long-term approach, issues around vandalism, damage and young people's facilities will be seriously considered in small villages and hamlets.

'In the meantime the resident officer PC Ken Dine will be making efforts to develop a rapport with these young people so they are aware of the consequences of their behaviour to other people in the community.'
