aA TOY library which was one of the services offered by the Open Door Family Centre in Okehampton before it closed in May re-opened this week but funds are needed to keep it going beyond three months.
The Open Door Family Centre Support Group, which continues to operate, is seeking more funding to continue the toy library beyond September when the £500 grant from Social Services runs out.
Secretary of the support group Jim Goodwin said 200 people regularly used the toy library before the centre at Tenby House closed because Social Services ended its contract with NCH Action for Children which ran the centre.
All the toys in the library were funded by the support group to the tune of £1,200.
'We want to get it going again if we can,' said Mr Goodwin. 'There is no other toy library in this area. The nearest one is Tavistock which is not easy to get to if you do not have a car.
'As so often is the case, the kids who need it the most lose out.'
The support group is looking for a volunteer administration advisor who has experience of running a small business and funding matters.
'We are also looking for people who are prepared to give up a couple of hours a week,' said Mr Goodwin.
Social Services gave its assurance at the time of the closure that it would continue to support the services that had been provided at Tenby House.
The end of the contract had given them the opportunity to look closely at what worked well and where services could be successfully developed, they said.
A spokesman for social services said this week that an interim payment for three months had been given pending an application for funding from the Early Years Partnership. If the bid was unsuccessful, social services would look again at making up the shortfall, he said.
The toy library will be open in Tenby House from 10am to noon and 1pm to 3pm on Wednesdays and Fridays until the end of September.
