A GROUP which is concerned with cleaning and caring for Okehampton's rivers has received a grant of £175 from the Town Council.

The money for the Rivers Improvement Group is the last of the grant aid available from the authority this financial year.

Formed almost two years ago, the group has a core of six members and has held several river cleaning days where army cadets and other volunteers have become involved. It also arranged for a survey to be carried out on the East and West Okement Rivers by the Westcountry Rivers Trust.

Town clerk John Winchester told members of the Town Council this week there was £175 left in the budget for grant aid until April 1 when the new financial year began.

'The money will be used by the group to access funds from other sources,' he said. 'The group is very much in its infancy and is looking for recognition — certainly from us — and other authorities.

'A grant would give them some kudos and allow them to move forward with their plans.'

The Rivers Improvement Group was started after concern that Okehampton was not make the most of or taking enough pride in the Okement Rivers which meet in the middle of town.
