BELSTONE Cricket Club has been named a winner in Jewson's Building Better Communities competition, winning themselves £1,000.

The club was formed in 1993 as a small village team and has since risen through five divisions to currently play in Division One of the North Devon League.

The club is open to players of all ages and is supported by local volunteers and donations. The prize money will be put towards improving their pavilion.

Chris Walpole, secretary at the club, said: 'Receiving this prize out of so many projects is an incredible achievement.

'The contribution from Jewson is a vital step towards providing a safe, modern space for our team and the local community to take advantage of.'

The winning projects were invited to a Building Better Communities celebration event at the Greenworks Training Academy in Birmingham earlier this month, where property expert and TV presenter Sarah Beeny presented the lucky winners with their prizes.

David Fenton, marketing director at Jewson, said: 'A huge congratulations goes out to all the Building Better Communities competition finalists.

'From over 2,000 entries we selected just 14 projects, so it's a fantastic achievement for the winners and we can't wait to see the positive effect the prize money will have.

'We'd also like to thank every single project that was involved in the Building Better Communities competition, from the start to the end.

'The work all of these initiatives do is essential to the lives of so many people across the country so it was really difficult to pick just 14 winners.'

Launched in February, the Building Better Communities initiative is designed to boost community spirit up and down the country by asking projects to nominate themselves for the chance to win a share of £100,000.

Jewson received over 2,000 entries which, with the help of a team of Jewson employees and supplier partners, were narrowed down to a shortlist of 63 projects.

After a combination of votes from the general public and further judging, Jewson announced the final 14 worthy winners – each receiving their own slice of the £100,000 prize pot.

The prize money will help pay for supplies and labour to improve projects across the country which are so close to the hearts of their community.
