SPORTS grants of up to £700 are now available from West Devon Borough Council to fund a wide range of projects to benefit local communities. Grants awarded are usually given to community organisations whose projects improve the quality, range and impact of sport in West Devon. Increased access to the sport and encouraging people to take part are also looked on favourably. A spokesman for the borough said: ?For example, Chagford Tennis Club obtained a grant for a new ball machine, whilst the Tavistock-based Triathlon Club Zest was awarded money towards training coaches and buying equipment towards the cycling element of the sport. ?The council usually makes a decision on grants within six weeks of applying ? organisations should note that funding can only be applied for in advance of costs and will not be awarded retrospectively.? Only West Devon organisations can apply for these special grants.. Any groups who would like an application form and guidance notes should click on to the council?s website at http://www.westdevon.gov.uk">www.westdevon.gov.uk and download the information via the services link which leads on to the sports development section. The spokesman said: ?It?s also advisable to have a chat with the relevant officer at the council before applying for a grant to ensure your project is suitable for the scheme. They can offer advice to develop your project and help you find other sources of funding.?
