MONEY has come flooding into the Gilead Foundation at Jacobstowe after an appeal to the public to help the charity buy 25 cows.

The Christian organisation is hoping to build up its own herd as the cost of renting 100 animals has become too high.

The funds to buy 12 cows, at approximately £325 each, have been received following an article in the Okehampton Times a month ago and the charity is hoping to purchase 25 in total.

The profits from the sale of milk produced at Gilead's farm goes towards funding the charity's work which involves helping people who have experienced difficulties in their lives.

The organisation also runs a number of training initiatives to equip people with the skills and confidence they need to get back into work.

Joanna Drew from the Gilead Foundation said she was really pleased with the response. Donations had been received from individuals and the churches.

'We want to buy short-horn cattle and our aim is to go organic in the next few years,' she said. 'At the moment we retail the milk in Plymouth but we would like to sell it in Exeter as well.'

Each cow is likely to produce £1,000 worth of milk which makes a profit of £300 a year for the charity.

Anyone wishing to make a donation should call Joanna or her husband, Tim, on 01837 861138.
