THE Sports and Community centre in Lamerton has had a welcome surprise from local county councillor Roy Connelly.
A cheque for £6,500 is winging its way towards the centre to buy brand new outdoor play equipment for young people.
The money has come from Cllr Connelly's 'Investing in Devon fund'. This is an initiative whereby councillors have a sum of money to donate to any local organisation or charity of their choice.
The centre has used the additional funding to buy a new outdoor roundabout for children coming to the centre for play sessions.
Cllr Connelly said: 'I am delighted to be able to help the sports centre which provides such a valuable facility for the community.
'The play equipment is desperately needed so I know the parents and children will enjoy the new roundabout!'
The centre provides a range of activities, educational and recreational for both young people and older people such as children's parties, play groups, pilates, yoga and badminton classes, upholstery and needlework classes.
Treasurer of the Lamerton Sports and Community Centre, Gerald Crump, said: 'People come from far and wide to visit the centre as it is such a fantastic facility, however the committee is made up of trustees who are all volunteers and we very much rely on support from the local community.
'We have previously had funding from other partners as well as from our own residents' fundraising initiatives so it's very much been a joint effort to keep the centre running.'
