THE VILLAGE of South Zeal enjoyed a marvellous carnival last weekend, with a high number and quality of entries and a good turnout lining the streets to watch the carnival procession.

Dawn Watkins, joint chair of the carnival committee, said the children?s fancy dress parade on Saturday afternoon had attracted a ?tremendous? number of entries, all of a high standard.

The grand evening procession of 17 floats began at 7pm and was headed by Carnival Queen Cassie Hooper.

Cassie was crowned Carnival Queen by Devon Folk President and television gardener Terry Underhill at the Dartmoor Folk Festival in August.

Accompanying 13-year-old Cassie were her attendants Freedom VanRiel and Hannah Counter. This year?s carnival prince and princess were Sam Vincent and Grace Davey.

St John Boys Brigade and Hatherleigh Silver Band were on hand to provide musical entertainment during the carnival.

The money raised from collections on the day will go towards the charity CLIC? Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood.

Mrs Watkins said the carnival committee wanted to say thank you to everyone who took part or helped behind the scenes to ensure the carnival was such a success.

She said the committee was very grateful to everyone who supported the carnival.
