CARERS of adults with learning disabilities have been visiting Morwellham as part of a new short-term respite programme.
Jackie Milan, learning disabilities carers' worker said more than 2,700 people have a learning disability in Devon, while 7,300 adults have autism.
Jackie said: 'Their carers are often under great pressure and we now have funding to allow time off for people to look after their own needs.
'The programme lets carers take part in events and visit places they have always wanted to, while also supporting the many tourist attractions and community activities that are going on all the time across South Devon.
'At our regular meetings in Tavistock, carers identified Morwellham as somewhere they have always wanted to visit and we were pleased to be able to make that possible.'
Jackie said other suggestions included arts events, days out, tours, theatre and cinema visits and they were still looking for other ideas.
'However, we do know that many carers are not aware of the support and opportunities available,' added Jackie.
'Therefore, if you look after an adult with learning disabilities, or know of someone who would like to take some time out from their very pressured lives, don't hesitate to get in touch on 07879 881298.'
