A FORMER West Devon and Tavistock town councillor has entered the race to represent the area on Devon County Council. He is Michael Pithouse, who will be standing as the Liberal Party candidate.

Mr Pithouse represented Milton Ford ward as an Independent on West Devon Borough Council until resigning last year. At the 1997 general election he fought West Devon and Torridge for the Liberal Party — formed by Liberals who did not agree with the old party's merger with the Social Democratic Party.

Also standing in the Tavistock Rural ward at the county elections are Conservative John Taylor and Liberal Democrat Roy Connelly.

Polling day is Thursday, May 3, but there are calls for the election to be postponed because of the foot and mouth crisis.
