AN appeal for information has been issued by an Australian woman involved in a history project.

Judy Hirst, of Sale in Victoria, is asking Times readers for help in tracking down a world war one nursing home she believes existed in the Tavistock area.

Judy said: 'We have a travelling clock which has inscribed "Presented to Sister Stevenson, as a token of admiration by the boys of Mt Tavy 16/12/17".

'Miss Jemma Stevenson ran a private hospital called St Helen's Private Hospital which was reported to have been the only private hospital outside Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

'Jemma bought the hospital about 1937, ran it as a hospital then at a later date turned it into flats which were occupied by RAAF men during world war two. Jemma is believed to have been born in Northern Ireland in 1892.'

Judy said she would like to obtain some information about Mt Tavy nursing home, if indeed there was one.

'This information would be added to a history the Sale and District Family History Group are compiling about the private hospitals of Sale before they closed due to stricter regulations,' said Judy.
