IN response to the letter included in the Times on Thursday, September 25 on the subject of overnight parking on Dartmoor, the National Park would like to point out that the byelaw prohibiting overnight parking has been in place for many years. Signage has also been in place previously and we have just finished a programme of replacement of these signs. Dartmoor National Park is one of the few places where true wild camping without a vehicle ie using a small backpacking tent, is permitted in certain locations under the byelaws and people can access information on this by visiting our website http://www.dartmoor.gov.uk">www.dartmoor.gov.uk Using a motor vehicle does not constitute wild camping under the byelaws. However, the National Park does welcome both campervans and caravans and would encourage the owners of such vehicles to seek out the many small sites which are available on Dartmoor. These locations offer a better alternative to sleeping in a car park as they are away from the road and enable a better experience of Dartmoor's 'wildness'. As they are predominantly on small farms, they are also then helping to put something back into the local economy and contributing to the management of this special landscape.
