CONGRATULATIONS to Cameron Brodie of Kelly College, who was chosen to represent Great Britain in Portland, Oregon at the 2010 Paul Bergen Junior International Short course Swimming Championships this month.
Cameron, aged 18, left Kelly last weekend to travel to America to compete and then on his return he is off to Lanzarote for a Swim Camp with his coach Robin Brew and other members of the swim squad at Kelly College.
Cameron recently represented Scotland in Delhi at the Commonwealth Games, returning home with a silver medal for the 4 x 200m freestyle relay.
Cameron joined Kelly College in January 2007 as a 14-year-old and won his first age group national championships in August same year for the 14-year-old 100m butterfly in Sheffield. Since then, Cameron has gone on to win Youth National Championships in both the 100m and 200m butterfly, being the current holder of both these events for the 17/18-year-olds. He will defend these titles for the last time in 2011.
Although Cameron's best event is the 200m butterfly, his favourite stroke is the freestyle because he never swims it, so it is fun when he does. His favourite swimming venue is Ponds Forge International Sporting Centre in Sheffield. He says 'he loves how it is in the centre of the city, it always has a good atmosphere and it's special because we only go a couple of times a year.'
Cameron's most memorable event was the Commonwealth Games in Delhi which, he said: 'It was so different from anything that I have ever been to, or imagined. Everything about it made it really special and it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.'
Cameron says he owes his parents everything, because they have supported everything he has done 100 percent. He says he 'wouldn't be here without dedication, determination and drive — three qualities that you need to become a good athlete.'
