AT last, someone has spoken out about the dangers associated with crossings in Tavistock (Times, March 17). We moved here in January 2004, and in a year have been nearly knocked over twice, when crossing the pelican crossing in Dolvin Road. Myself and my two children were aware and made sure that the cars were slowing down, before crossing on the green man, so the lights are definitely red. Lo and behold, just a few weeks ago, it was a near miss (quite literally) for all three of us. St Rumon?s are aware that there is an issue with this crossing in particular, and have on occasions informed parents to be extremely careful through their newsletter (which of course they do not have to!). I also have a child at Tavistock College, and am concerned for her safety whilst walking to school, without parental supervision. We as parents are encouraged to walk to and from school, yet are not given the reassurance by the drivers on our roads. I am disappointed that Sgt Bob Hughes, has said that he is unaware as the police have had incidents reported to them. I understand that it is a difficult issue to resolve, as the incidents happen at all different times. However, what will it take for people to stand up and be accountable to ensure the safety of our children, and residents of Tavistock? If this is an issue across the centre of Tavistock, perhaps we should look at putting cameras on the red lights, and ensuring that our signs are clear and obvious for the zebra crossings. Perhaps the police could come up with some solutions to resolving this issue? It may even save them time and resources in the long run! Alison Lynch [email protected]">[email protected]
