MEMBERS of Tavistock Camera Club have taken up the South West of England Photo Challenge.

They have been busy taking photographs that celebrate the best of the Westcountry to enter in this new regional photographic competition.

Tavistock Camera Club has about 30 regular club members, from all walks of life, who meet every Wednesday in the Alexandra Centre to share their interest in traditional photography and newer digital techniques. Currently about 10 members are expected to enter the Photo Challenge with their view of life in and around the Westcountry.

Tavistock Camera Club chairman Keith Urro said: 'As a club we aim to cater for both the novice and the more advanced photographer. We have a programme of guest speakers and participate in club and inter-club competitions on specific themes and topics'.

Past speakers have included wildlife photographer Richard Austin and Dartmoor documentary photographer, Chris Chapman, who will be one of the competition judges.

Keith Urro said: 'A camera club is a great way for people to be able to explore their interest in photography.

'Some of our members belong to the Royal Photographic Society and are always keen to coach those just starting out.

'The Alexander Centre has its own darkroom, so members are able to experiment with developing techniques before investing in their own facilities,' he said.

The competition is being run in conjunction with the Royal Photographic Society and the South West of England Regional Development Agency.

The competition is being run in three sub-regional finals with the winners going through to a grand South West of England Photo Challenge 2002 final in October. There are lots of exciting prizes to be won from compact and digital cameras to cash prizes for professionals.
