CALSTOCK Parish Council has reported that the Forest for Calstock project is well underway, with 1,300 trees planted by volunteers.

Parish clerk Sue Lemon said the council ‘would like to thank every single volunteer’ who got involved in planting them.

‘With volunteer team leaders Roger Harris, Jane Weatherby and Neil Pope coordinating a team of volunteers who turned out every day whatever the weather, 1,300 trees were planted,’ she said.

‘The parish council would like to thank every single volunteer for helping with this great project. This project was made possible with funding, advice and support from the Forest for Cornwall and the Tree Council. We will start planning for phase two early next year.’

The parish council continued the green theme with a wreath workshop with florist Claire Roper to show people how to make evergreen wreaths to remember departed loved ones in the two cemeteries in Calstock and Albaston. This follows the parish council’s decision to ban plastic tributes on graves earlier this year.

‘This was well-attended with some participants putting their creations on the graves of their loved ones,’ said Sue. ‘We had a good time getting to know each other and getting inspiration. We will be holding another workshop in the spring, in time for Mother’s Day. Thank you to Claire Roper for facilitating this.’

She added that Thursday, January 20 would be a ‘big day’ for Calstock parish, being both the referendum on Calstock Neighbourhood Plan and the election for a vacant seat on the parish council for Harrowbarrow ward. The parish council is also planning a new project to create a memorial garden on the Millennium Green at Albaston in the New Year where parents will be able to remember stillborn babies.
