Devon and Exeter Intermediate one Okehampton Argyle Second 2 Exmouth Second 0 OKEHAMPTON Second team carried on their good run of form with a 2-0 victory over a well organised Exmouth Second team on Saturday gaining valuable points to help push them up the table after playing mainly cup games in recent weeks. This season has seen the seconds lose some players to the first team and with captain Mark Hampson out injured for most of the season so far it was good to welcome back Kevin Gill from his travels to add some solid defensive qualities to the back four and also James Callaghan to add some muscle up front. Argyle started the brighter of the teams and with 10 minutes gone a big kick from goalkeeper Harry Geering was flicked on to Paul Yipp whose curling 20 yard effort hit the outside of the post. Although Argyle never had it their own way Exmouth never troubled Geering in goal too much which was mainly due to some solid defending from Gill, Ditchburn, Maddax and Tom Williams - who fitted in well for his first game at right back. On 30 minutes Argyle created their best chance so far when some good build up play through Entwistle and Atherton slipped the ball to Callaghan whose shot was well saved by the Exmouth keeper who tipped it around for a corner. From the resulting corner Entwistle had a good shot go just wide. Argyle kept the pressure on for the rest of the half and another good move saw Callaghan's effort go inches wide and then strike partner Prouse found himself clean through with just the keeper to beat but the ball took a bad bounce and he shot straight at the keeper. The second half began the same as the first and finished with Argyle creating the best chances but not finding the back of the net. Exmouth should have made Okehampton pay for their missed opportunities on 58 minutes when their striker found himself free in front of goal and with the net begging but he totally miskicked and sent the ball wide. It wasn't until the 69th minute before the deadlock was broken. A good move down the left involving Maddax and Drew, whose excellent cross looked bound for Callaghan at the far post until an Exmouth defender's stretching leg knocked it into his own net. With having attained the lead the Argyle manager brought on fresh legs for the last 20 to 15 minutes and the team played kept hold of the ball well, still creating chances and on 80 minutes Callaghan got his just rewards for his hard work by slotting home Okehampton's second and securing the points for his team. l This week sees Okehampton Seconds continue their run of five consecutive home games to UAU. Kick off 2.15. The following week they are at home to Oak FC in the semi final of the Intermediate Cup, kick-off 2pm.
