DOG waste bins in Tavistock will come under the spotlight during the next few weeks, following a request for more from a group in the town.

Members of the town council's properties committee last week heard that Tavistock WI, as part of its tidy towns project, had requested that dog bins be placed at the access to Whitchurch Down from Westmoor Park, the path between Down Road and Whitchurch Down and at the top of Down Road.

Councillors heard the cost of each bin would be £180 — with an ongoing cost of £2.40 per bin per week for emptying.

Cllr Ted Sherrell said: 'After opposing clearing up after dogs around the Pimple last month, this is somewhat different. I have had complaints from people before now, particularly about the cut between Down Road and Whitchurch Down, and at Westmoor Close.

'I think perhaps we should look favourably on this request, because there's definitely a problem in these two areas.'

Cllr Brian Trew said he felt one of the areas most affected was between Greenlands and the moor.

Cllr Debo Sellis, chairman of the committee, agreed the area near Greenlands was a problem.

'There's someone who hangs a poo bag in a tree up there,' she said.

Cllr Mandy Govier said there was a problem in one of the routes to Greenlands used by children walking to school.

'All the children at St Peter's call it dog poo lane — we do need some bins up there,' she said.

Cllr David Best said he felt the town as a whole should be considered if more dog waste bins were to be purchased.

Cllr Harry Smith, chairman of the finance committee, said: 'As we may be spending money on this I believe we should look at the whole situation throughout the town and do it as one operation — use this request as a catalyst.'

The committee agreed to defer the installation of dog waste bins for a future meeting, when the matter could be looked into 'holistically'.

The WI will be informed of the plan — the decision was due to be ratified by the full council at its meeting on Tuesday.
