THE election to fill an empty seat on West Devon Borough Council will be held on the same day as the county and General Election, Thursday June 7.

The Buckland Monachorum ward seat was made vacant by the resignation of Conservative Gordon Mills this spring.

Two candidates are standing for the borough seat. They are Peter Aizlewood, a Yelverton resident who represents the Liberal Democrats, and Patricia Campbell, of Sampford Spiney, for the Conservative Party.

Mr Aizlewood, aged 61, has lived in the Yelverton area for about 20 years. He is a retired lecturer involved in voluntary work at present.

Mrs Campbell, aged 69, has lived in the area since 1977. Two of her children work abroad as doctors and one lives in Tavistock. She has one grandchild.

The political make up of the 30-seat borough council is currently: eight Liberal Democrat, 12 Independent, nine Conservative and the one vacant seat.

Polling stations for the ward will be at Buckland Monachorum Village Hall, the village hairdresser in Crapstone, Milton Combe Village Hall, St Paul's Church Hall in Yelverton and the village Community Centre in Crapstone.
