IT was a busy week for Kelly College 1st XI starting with a home fixture against Whitchurch Wayfarers on April 29. Whitchurch won the toss and decided to bat on a pitch looking full of runs. All the Whitchurch batsmen managed to contribute to the score of 178 for 7 declared, A Woodrow and M Whitcher being the main run scorers. The Kelly bowlers struggled with accuracy but were still pleased with their efforts, especially spinners J Hare and R Goldsby-West who took two wickets each. In reply Kelly?s innings got off to the worst possible start losing both openers for a duck. The middle order batted sensibly taking the score to 122 for 7 ensuring a comfortable draw, F Frost was the leading run scorer with 27. On May 2 the eagerly anticipated game versus the MCC took place. Former Kelly College student Richard Jones opened the batting with J Hughes. The young Kelly bowlers had no answer to Jones? fine array of shots all around the pitch. Jones was eventually dismissed for a wonderful 100. The MCC finished their innings on 171 for 3. The Kelly innings began slowly against the experienced L Sanders and former Devon player J Rhodes. The Kelly innings closed on 123 for 7 ensuring another draw. J Killingbeck scored a cavalier 30 not out and N Probert a more cultured 25. On Wednesday Tavistock College were the visitors. Kelly batted first, good bowling from the Tavistock openers S Glidden and P Edgely made runs difficult to come by. N Probert and J Hare who both scored 39 were the main contributors in Kelly?s declared total of 159. Tavistock?s depleted batting line-up found it difficult to cope with the pace and accuracy of R Thomas and O Thomas and Tavistock were all out for 20. On Saturday Shebbear visited Kelly. Shebbear won the toss and decided to bat, their openers were scoring at over 6 runs per over mainly due to Kelly?s indisciplined bowlers, but with the introduction of spinner J Hare and medium pacer R Thomas wickets fell at regular intervals, Hare taking 4 for 44 and R Thomas taking 3 for 10. Shebbear declared their innings on 159 for 8. In reply openers N Probert and R Thomas took the score to over 100 before Probert was out for 71. Wickets began to fall until S Davy and J Hare took their team home to a comfortable five wicket victory.
