TWO businesses in West Devon and East Cornwall are finalists in the RSPCA Good Business Awards, which are awarded for commitment to achieving high standards of animal welfare.

West Frogwell Farm in Callington is one of three finalists in the independent food retailer category.

It specialises in traditionally-reared pork from its herd of British Saddlebacks, season lamb and free-range chicken, and was commended for implementing strict animal welfare policies on pig-rearing and transportation, together with its free-range hens and ducks.

In the independent restaurant category, Percy's Country Hotel and Restaurant at Virginstow near Okehampton has reached the finalist list, along with four others from Cambridge, Cornwall and Berkshire.

The hotel promotes animal welfare on its website and has initiated inspections of suppliers' farms, stopped using fish it was concerned had been caught when carrying eggs, and uses eggs from its own hens.

The final results will be announced at the awards gala in London on October 9.
