Bridestowe v Lewdown
Saturday's 'local derby' against Lewdown was a tense and drama filled affair. Both sides needed the points, Bridestowe to ensure promotion, Lewdown to keep them free of the relegation zone.
Winning the toss captain Chris Lavis asked Lewdown to bat first. This seemed to to work in Bridestowe's favour as runs were hard to score and early wickets resulted in Lewdown being 58 for 3.
J Skuse (53) and J Gliddon (47) were the saviours of Lewdown's innings before Gavin McDougal and Chris Lavis steadied Bridestowe's bowling display with 2 for 38 and 3 for 47 respectively. Gary Sizmur was the pick of the opening bowlers with 2 for 38. Lewdown were bowled out for 218.
Bridestowe, with two of their recognised batsmen unavailable for this match, knew they had it all to do after tea. Like their opponents the opening batsmen found runs hard to score. Gary Sizmur ground out a respectable 20 until caught by Glidden, the score then was then 69 for 4! A dogged 35 from Phil Woods supported by the middle order of the Griffiths brothers and McDougal frustrated Lewdown's attempt to secure a surprise victory.
A draw was the final result with Bridestowe scoring 155 for 8. C Hughes 2 for 28 and club professional M Porage 2 for 34 were the pick of the Lewdown bowlers.
The 10 points Bridestowe earned from this match has secured their promotion into Devon Division C for next season and Lewdown with the 15 points earned ensured there is no relegation threat for them.
Well done to the team.
