BRENTOR resident Captain Simon Martin has been appointed as the High Sheriff of Devon.

The esteemed role of high sheriff is a royal appointment and one which Captain Martin will hold for a year.

In the appointment service last Thursday (April 4) at the Church St Michael de Rupe, Brentor, the congregation heard that the high sheriff’s role involved working for the good of the community and in support of the police and courts.

Captain Martin has lived in Brentor for 37 years and said he was ‘twice blessed’ with having Christ Church and St Michael de Rupe on his doorstep so it was fitting for his appointment to be held at the ‘church on the hill’.

He added that his chosen charities during his year of office would include CHICKS (Countryside Holidays for Inner City Kids), based at Brentor, and Operation Encompass.

The under sheriff Simon Barnett and deputy under sheriff Philip Wolfgang were appointed as well as chaplain to the high sheriff, the Rev Preb Nick Shutt, clerk to the high sheriff Lynn Gillard and two cadets.
