A PRIMARY school pupil of only six years old dived into success recently bagging 11th place in a national diving competition.
Benjamin Bluett, from St Rumon's Primary School in Tavistock, competed above his age group in the eight to nine years boys category of the White Rose novice diving competition in Leeds, and finished a respectable 11th out of 16 competitors.
Benjamin's mother, Denise Bluett, was proud of him. She said: 'He came out after the competition and I was absolutely over the moon. He was disappointed that he didn't get a medal and it took his 10-year-old team mate to tell him how great he was before he'd realised how well he'd done.'
Benjamin dives with Plymouth Diving in Central Park, and it was his coach that put him forward for the competition along with team mates from the club.
Denise said: 'The first time he went down to the pool was just before he turned five, but they were just fun sessions. He just loved it there and went up through the sessions — he's now in a group with up to 10-year-olds.'
Benjamin trains twice a week, doing an hour in the dry gym followed by an hour in the swimming pool.
The team as a whole did incredibly well, scooping one gold medal and three silver medals between them.
