THE final meeting of Okehampton Beekeepers' summer programme attracted more than 30 branch members – a record for the branch.
The apiary has more than a dozen active colonies so it was possible to divide beekeepers into three groups to ensure all were able to get a good view of the hive inspections in progress.
Hives were opened and inspected by Ray King, Glyn Berrington and Will Pyne. Some ten colonies were inspected – all were healthy with very low varroa infestation.
Will Pyne said: 'The weather smiled on us throughout and the bees were very placid and easy to manage — testament to Ray's Queen rearing expertise.
'The meeting concluded with a picnic bring and share tea, enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Ray and Valery for hosting such a large gathering and ensuring an enjoyable and interesting beekeeping afternoon.'
The branch's next meeting is at 7.30pm on Tuesday, October 12 at Whiddon Down village hall.
