THE village of Bow has shown its community spirit by coming together to hold a fundraising campaign to help the survivors of the Indian Ocean tsunami. Villagers were keen to do something to help and so the ?Box From Bow? initiative was born. It will raise funds for the ShelterBox Trust, run by the Rotary Club. Each box provides shelter and warmth for up to ten people ? containing a large tent, sleeping bags, multi-fuel cooker, water purification, spade, rope and other vital items. The cost of a complete ShelterBox is £490. As donations are received the boxes and new equipment are purchased. Donations of less then the cost of a complete box are welcome and are used to buy individual items toward a full box. Assuming six months? use, a box can give shelter and warmth for less than 30p per person per day. On Saturday week, the campaign got off to a magnificent start, with a coffee morning, which raised £907.89. The event was intended as only the start of various fundraising ideas. Organiser Alison Blair said: ?It was a humbling and overwhelming success thanks to all the folk who walked into the church rooms the day before, arms brimming with stuff; to those that set up stalls, made tea and coffee and ran the phenomenally successful raffle and, of course, to everyone that turned up.? A bring and share supper organised by Ken Wills was recently held in the village to continue the fundraising. The next event will take place on Saturday, February 12, in the shape of a Valentine?s Family Disco, running from 8pm to midnight. Come to Bow Village Hall for fun, music and romance for all ? tickets cost £4. For more information on future events or if you have ideas or can help, call Alison on 01363 82210.
